My obvious symptoms started with my second pregnancy when I went into active labor at 26 weeks. Up to then, I was clueless as to how HCM was affecting our lives. After that pregnancy, I had symptomatic rhythm issues and I passed out biking up a hill. I was 34 and in amazing shape pulling a 72-pound load up a major incline in Alaska. It was easy and I was laughing as I passed out! One minute I was so happy to be in such great shape and the next minute I woke up from having passed out, I told no one and got back onto the bike and rode home. I was jogging on another incline that same summer and went down again. One day I was having chest pains with full-body cold sweats and I finally went to the ER. I was diagnosed with IHSS in 1996 which is now called HCM (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy).
