Iowa City, Iowa is a university town along the Iowa River on the east side of the state. It is approximately 30 miles south of Cedar Rapids and 60 miles west of the “Quad Cities” of Davenport and Bettendorf, IA and Moline and Rock Island, IL. The University of Iowa was founded in 1847 and is the region’s top employer. Iowa City was the state capital until 1857, when that designation was transferred to Des Moines; however, the old capitol building has been converted into a museum. Sports are very popular, as the hometown Iowa Hawkeyes are members of the Big Ten Conference in college football. The arts play an important role as well, as Iowa City has been designated a UNESCO City of Literature by the United Nations, making it part of the UNESCO Creative Cities network, in addition to being home to the famed Iowa Writers Workshop. The Herbert Hoover Presidential Library is a local destination as well.
Winters in Iowa City are cold but feature only moderate snowfall. Summers are warm yet rainy. Don’t forget to check the weather a few days before you visit.

A few items of note:
- The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics are located at 200 Hawkins Drive, Iowa City, IA 52242. The UI Heart and Vascular Center, which is home to the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy program, is in room 4800 of the John Pappajohn Pavilion (JPP) and can be accessed by taking Elevator I to Level 4.
- Most local accommodations are minutes from University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics and UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital, with the range of drive-times running from 2 to 12 minutes.
- On certain weekends, (Hawkeye home football games in the fall, University graduation in mid-May, and weddings in June) hotels and motels near the hospital tend to fill up well in advance.

Many lodging options that do not include a kitchenette do have refrigerators and/or microwaves available to guests. You may need to request them in advance.

3-star hotel; The COE rate is $119/night plus tax and applies to Double Queen rooms only; be sure to reserve directly through the hotel and not a 3rd party in order to receive the discount. Connecting rooms are available and can be guaranteed only if you make the request at the time of reservation. The hotel has their own shuttle to the hospital, which runs every 1/2 hour, Monday-Friday, 7:30 am-7:00 pm; it must be scheduled at least one hour in advance. There is a microwave and mini fridge in every room. Self-parking is available on site for free but limited to one vehicle per guest room during Iowa football or basketball home games.

3-star hotel; The COE discount rate is $94/night plus tax; call to make your reservation. Connecting rooms are available but cannot be guaranteed. King Suites have sofa beds. Microwaves and mini fridges are available in all rooms. The hotel has their own courtesy shuttle, running 7:00 am-10:00 pm, anywhere in a 5-mile radius; call about an hour in advance to arrange. Free self-parking is available on site.

Heartland Inn Coralville (319-351-8132 OR 800-334-3277)
2-star hotel; The COE discount rate is $78.99/night plus tax; call to make your reservation. Connecting rooms are available but cannot be guaranteed; put in your request as early as possible. Some of the rooms have reclining chairs, and that request can be made at the time of reservation. A few rooms have kitchenettes, while all of the remaining rooms have a mini fridge and a microwave. The hotel has a complimentary Hospital Shuttle, which runs Monday-Friday, 5:20 am-8:20 pm, every half hour at 20 minutes after the hour and 10 minutes to the hour; it runs on weekends from 8:50 am-4:50 pm, once an hour. Free self-parking is available on site. Complimentary dinner is available Monday through Thursday nights, and complimentary breakfast is available every day. Self-parking is available on site for $15/day in the city ramp behind the hotel, which has a 2nd floor skyway into the hotel and includes handicap parking. Some King rooms have a sofa bed. Connecting rooms are available but cannot be guaranteed. All rooms have a mini fridge and a microwave. There is a courtesy Hotel Shuttle to the Hospital that runs 7:00 am-5:00 pm, Monday-Saturday, on demand.
