Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is the leading cause of sudden cardiac arrest in those under 40 years of age, including young athletes. Sadly some families learn of HCM for the first time after a sudden and unexpected death. Sadly Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) caused by HCM may be the first time the words "hypertrophic cardiomyopathy" had ever crossed your radar. We know how shocking it is to learn that a loved one was taken by a condition that is, in most, detectable and treatable. We encourage those who have experienced a loss to seek mental health services to help cope with the loss and navigate the grieving process. The HCMA can offer to assist to you in better understanding HCM and how to ensure others in your family are properly monitored.
Some families seek to get very involved in raising awareness, moving legislation or supporting others, others simply seek peace of mind. Which ever path is appropriate for you and your family the HCMA is here to walk with you during this difficult time.
