Medications

HCM has many treatment options that may be considered.  Each patient will need to evaluate what is in their best interest both short-term and long-term before engaging in treatment for HCM.


One of the primary missions of the HCMA is to increase the number of, and access to, healthcare professionals providing evidence-based treatment of HCM.

    Blood thinners (anticoagulants) make it harder for blood to clot. They are used in HCM mainly to reduce the danger of stroke among those with atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, or artificial valves.

  • Sodium Channel Blockers

    Sodium channel blockers inhibit the movement of sodium into cells. In HCM, they have several different uses.

    Sodium channel blockers were mainly developed as antiarrhythmics. Some were developed as local anesthetics. Two of these drugs play an important role in treating HCM patients.
