Rochester, New York, the 4th-largest city in the state, resides on the southern shores of Lake Ontario, across the border from Canada, in the Finger Lakes region of Western New York. In 1825, when the Erie Canal connected the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes, Rochester became one of the first economic “boomtowns.” First known as the “Flour City,” for its manufacturing of the popular baking item, it later became known as the “Flower City,” a center of gardening excellence that is still celebrated with an annual Lilac Festival. Rochester was named Condé Nast’s 2nd friendliest city in the U.S. in 2023 and was the hometown to many influential people and businesses, including: escaped slave, abolitionist, and namesake of the local airport, Frederick Douglass; his good friend and fellow civil rights leader, women’s suffragist Susan B. Anthony; Eastman Kodak founder George Eastman; Xerox; Wegman’s; and Western Union. Local universities include Rochester Institute of Technology and the University of Rochester.
The weather in Rochester features four very distinct seasons, winter being the longest. Although average snowfall is typically close to 100 inches, not nearly that much has fallen within the past five years. Summers can be quite lovely. Don’t forget to check the weather a few days before you visit.
