NYU Langone Hospital-Long Island, formerly NYU Winthrop Hospital, is the Long Island base of NYU Langone Health and is ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top-10 New York metro-area hospitals. The hospital was founded in 1896 by local physicians and concerned citizens and is now a 591-bed medical academic center and ACS Level 1 Trauma Center. The hospital features more than 75 divisions of specialty care, offering comprehensive inpatient and outpatient programs and services to address every stage of life. NYU Langone Hospital-Long Island also has a Research Institute that conducts robust research and studies that are helping to shape the future of medicine. Mineola, New York is in Nassau County, in the western half of Long Island. You may hear the locals refer to it in their famous accent as “Lawn GUY-lind.” However you pronounce it, Long Island is the 10th largest island in the United States, but it is, by far, the most populous; more people live there than in the state of Rhode Island or the countries Jamaica and Ireland. In fact, if Long Island were its own state, it would be the 13th most populous in the country, despite being only 120 miles long and 20 miles wide. Although the NYC boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens are technically part of Long Island, the name generally refers to Nassau and Suffolk counties. Montauk, home to the oldest lighthouse in the state, is the easternmost point on the island. The area is famous for: the wealthy haven that is The Hamptons; concerts at Jones Beach; The Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the Triple Crown at Belmont Park; lots of traffic on the Long Island Expressway; the Long Island Railroad (LIRR), which is the country’s oldest railroad still operating under the same name; and for being the hometown of such celebrities as Billy Joel, Mariah Carey, and Jerry Seinfeld.
