Memphis sits along the eastern bank of the Mississippi River, in the Southwest corner of Tennessee, across the water from Arkansas, and just north of Mississippi itself. The city touts itself as the “Home of blues, soul, and rock ‘n’roll.” You can visit the Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum, Sun Studio, Stax Museum of American Soul Music, B.B. King’s Blues Club, Beale Street’s bar and nightclub scene, and, of course, Elvis Presley’s Graceland. Southern accents and southern barbecue feature prominently in the city, which is also home to the NBA’s Grizzlies and the National Civil Rights Museum. President Andrew Jackson, one of Memphis’ founders, named it after the ancient Egyptian capital city of Memphis, which was also situated on the banks of a prominent river…the Nile.
Memphis, TN experiences extended periods of hot and humid weather, as well as extended periods of cold weather. The Spring and Fall tend to be much shorter. January is the coldest and snowiest month. May is the rainy season, and while September is the driest month, the dry season actually lasts about 7 months of the year. Don’t forget to check the weather a few days before you visit.
