HCM Journeys
Diagnostic Journey

The path to diagnosis can be simple for some, highly complicated, confusing and time-consuming for many.
Some people with HCM may not be properly diagnosed for months, years, or even decades because HCM can mimic other illnesses. Even with a family history of cardiac issues, some people with HCM are not referred to a cardiologist for family screenings.
Many physicians – including cardiologists – are not familiar enough with HCM, and are sometimes fooled by the similarity of some of its symptoms to other medical problems.
The HCMA provides support to the patient on their journey to avoid misdiagnosis and diagnostic delay.
All newly diagnosed HCM patients need some of the tests noted below, including ECG, echocardiogram, stress echocardiogram, event/Holter Monitoring, genetic testing, and cardiac MRI.
Some patients may need additional testing including cardiac catheterization, transesophageal echocardiogram, implantable loop recorder, and other testing.
Where to Go Next
Cardiac Genetics
A small sample of blood or saliva is tested for genetic causes of HCM. Learn why testing matters and what a result means.
Family Screening
HCM runs in families. When it is diagnosed, all blood relatives should be screened.
Symptom Journey
The typical symptoms of HCM, and why "normal" can be hard to define for people who have lived with it for years.
